Please join us on March 1 for the Chicago Disability Day of Mourning Vigil & Open Mic.
Every year, communities across the country and around the world join together for the Disability Day of Mourning (DDOM).
The DDOM is a community vigil that honors the lives of people with disabilities killed by their families and caregivers. The disability community comes together in remembrance, to share hope for the future, and to offer support.

Nondisabled allies, family members, and friends are welcome to join.
Event flow (What to Expect):
- Welcome & information about the Disability Day of Mourning
- Reading the names of people with disabilities who were killed by their caregivers, as well as people with disabilities who have been killed by the police and disability community members who passed away in 2022
- Open Mic for attendees to share thoughts, reflections, poems, etc.
This vigil is a hybrid event. It will be held on Zoom as well as in-person at Access Living (with limited spots!).
Covid-19 Safety: Please note that masks are required for entry into the Access Living building and must be worn at all times. You will also be asked to show proof of vaccination (if vaccinated) and to complete a health screener upon entry into the building. If wearing a mask is not accessible to you, please join us via Zoom!
Access information: We will have CART captions and ASL. The captions will be integrated into Zoom and projected with the Zoom on site. The ASL interpreter will be on site with a dedicated camera logged into Zoom. Access Living is a scent free building. Please refrain from wearing scented products, such as scented lotion, perfume and cologne. The vigil will be held on the 2nd floor of Access Living, which is accessible by elevator and equipped with ADA restrooms. If you have additional access requests, email chicagolanddpocc@gmail.com.

This event was organized by Chicago Coalition of Autistic and Neurodivergent Students (CANS), Chicagoland Disabled People of Color Coalition (DPOCC), the UIC Disability Cultural Center, the Co-Op Program at UIC's Department of Disability and Human Development, and Access Living.
