UIC College of Dentistry opens inclusive care clinic to treat patients with disabilities and special care needs

Clinicians performing dental work on a patient

The UIC College of Dentistry opened an Inclusive Care Clinic (ICC) in March to care for patients with disabilities and special care needs. The ICC serves patients 15 years or older who may encounter barriers receiving dental care due to accommodations needed for mobility and/or cognitive/sensory needs.

ICC faculty, students and staff are prepared to provide oral health care for patients with disabilities and complex health issues while ensuring their safety and comfort. The space is equipped with the necessary components including a sensory room, wheelchair lift, private treatment rooms, noise-cancelling headphones, personal entertainment tablets and weighted blankets.

Given the unique physical and social needs of individuals with a disability and/or special care needs, providing dental care requires additional preparation and training. Faculty, residents and student dentists at UIC College of Dentistry receive specialized training, including visits to area health centers and agencies that specialize in serving these needs, that help prepare them to serve diverse patient populations with skill and compassion.
