The State of Student Mental Health at UIC Report

The photo features an art piece on a large white paper canvas with various painted designs and words. On the left side of the canvas, “Disability Cultural Center” is painted in bright blue with “= Disability Pride” painted below it in purple. Under these words are swirls like waves, leaves or petals in purple and grey-blue. In the center of the canvas is a side profile of a hummingbird with the feathers painted in bright blue, purple, blue-grey, and green. Under the hummingbird are the words “LOVE YOURSELF” in capital letters painted in red. On the right side of the canvas is the root, trunk and branch system of a tree painted in light brown with leaves and grass painted in green. Below the roots are the capital letters “DCC” painted in light brown, with some faint brown-red paint textured markings under it. The canvas is hung up on a white-painted brick wall and has white holiday lights strung along its upper edge and sides to frame it in a golden glow.

What is the state of student mental health at UIC? According to the UIC Healthy Minds study, 64% of our students are “not flourishing” in terms of mental health. Yet, fewer than 4% of our students utilize the UIC Counseling Center.

As you view the results of the research project, Mental Health Storytelling for Disability Justice, you can explore what these statistics might mean and how we can think about better supporting mental health on the UIC campus.
