Chinatown Leaders Meet with Chancellor Miranda

CASL staff with UIC Chancellor Marie Lynn Miranda

Officials from the Chinese American Service League (CASL) welcomed UIC Chancellor Marie Lynn Miranda recently at their offices, located at 2141 S. Tan Court, along with representatives from Chinatown organizations, to discuss how the university and its staff can build a better relationship with this growing community.

Paul Luu, the chief executive officer at CASL, and Jered Pruitt, chief operating officer, provided a facility tour for Chancellor Miranda to review the wide range of civic programs the organization provides, including work on a south side health collaborative project with seven agency partners to provide patient care, collect health data and identify key social determinants of health, as well as plans to create a CASL campus on a 5.3-acre plot of land in the Bridgeport area along the Chicago River.

Among the partnership areas discussed were the use of UIC’s research capabilities–such as geo-spatial analysis–to better understand and direct the agency’s work on a data-driven basis, including the possibility of creating a community engaged research retreat to touch upon the different areas of interest to Chinatown organizations.

Several Chinatown organizations participated in a group discussion, including leaders from The Coalition for a Better Chinese American Community, The Chinatown Museum of Chicago, The Chinatown Chamber of Commerce, The Pui Tak Center and the Chinese American Civic Council.

This outreach is part of Chancellor Miranda’s community listening tour as she connects with key agencies across the city.
