The UIC Latino Cultural Center‘s online public presentation series, Radical Research from BIPOC Scholars at UIC, was launched in Spring 2022 to feature underrepresented postdoctoral scholars who joined the Bridge to Faculty program at UIC. Through an intersectional lens, these scholars revealed the complexity and specificity of their contemporary research and how the lives of those in the margins are impacted. Dr. Carla Tejada from the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering will present her research related to Urban Freight Transportation and the diverse set of impacts that residential deliveries have on cities.

Dr. Celso Mendoza from the Department of History will critically re-examine a supposedly legendary Spanish victory in the Conquest of Mexico, in which the Conquistadors are said to have killed a great Aztec leader, seized his banner, and routed the entire Aztec army in the Battle of Otumba. Using some of the earliest sources, especially Indigenous accounts of the Conquest, Dr. Mendoza demonstrates that the popular Spanish account of the battle is a complete fabrication. According to Indigenous sources, it was the Spaniards who left the battlefield defeated.

Dr. Ignacio Escalante Meza from the Department of Biological Sciences will discuss previous research on the behavioral ecology of daddy long-legs from Costa Rica and ongoing projects to study these arachnids in Chicago and Cook County. His research integrates questions & approaches from animal behavior, ecology, communication, biomechanics, and physiology to explore how and why animals perform the behaviors we observe. Dr. Gabriela Nunez Mir from the College of Biological Sciences, will focus on her research on invasive insect pests that have devastating effects on forest ecosystems. Her research takes advantage of the extensive amount of spatial and temporal distributional data available for a highly damaging forest pest, Lymantria dispar (spongy moth), to explore regional patterns on the local dynamics of invasive spread. Dr. David López-García from the College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs (CUPPA) will discuss his new book, Worker Mobility and Urban Policy in Latin America: Policy Interactions and Urban Outcomes in Mexico City. Through this work, he examines urban inequalities resulting from economic development, transport, and housing policies in the Mexico City Metropolitan Zone. Dr. Marisol Becerra from Public Administration and Policy, College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs (CUPPA) will talk about her research on Civic Engagement, examining the complexities of increasing park access in Latinx neighborhoods including Little Village in Chicago.
