The photo features two rows of people--seven people standing with four people sitting in front of them on chairs. Behind them is a large painted mural that fills the entire wall beyond the edges of the frame, featuring various overlapping colorful scenes of joyful Black American life.

The UIC Diversity Facilitation Collaborative (DFC) is hosting the upcoming workshop “Understanding Intersectionality: Historical Consequences of Oppression”.

Through this interactive workshop, participants will gain a greater understanding of intersectionality, White supremacy, privilege and power. There will be a special focus on identifying systems of oppression within higher education and how participants can work to uphold social justice and equity on UIC’s campus. This workshop will utilize individual reflection and collaborative group work to explore topics.

Through this interactive workshop, participants will:

  • Gain a greater understanding of intersectionality: White supremacy, privilege and power
  • Become better equipped to assess their own positionality and power and the ways they may contribute to systems of oppression on campus
  • Be able to identify the different forms of oppression, from individual to structural, in the context of UIC
  • Consider ways they can contribute to shifting UIC culture and policies to uphold social justice and equity
  • Engage in collaborative work by examining case studies
  • Actively participate in dialogic process and inquiry
