Solidarity Vigil for Muslim Communities
Monday, March 18, 2019 at 1 p.m. in the UIC East Campus Quad
The UIC Centers for Cultural Understanding and Social Change are deeply saddened by the terrorist attack on Muslims in New Zealand. The worshippers at the Al Noor Mosque and Linwood Islamic Center in Christchurch were targeted because they were Muslim. UIC and Chicago's Arab and Muslim communities are outraged and heartbroken by these events. Our communities have been forced. To endure the violence of white supremacy and white nationalism and their tacit approval from right wing governments for far too long. It is this same violence that targets synagogues and Black churches and the same violence that targets trans and immigrant lives, people of color and women’s bodies and autonomy. More than ever before, we need to build stronger intersectional movements and deeper solidarities. We need to celebrate diversities and inclusiveness and reach out to one another in humanity. We invite our campus and Chicagoland communities to come out and share your grief and sadness, express your solidarity and recommit to working together for a more just world that reaffirms our collective humanity. Please feel free to bring flowers, candles and/or signs expressing your solidarity.
Co-sponsored by the Office of Diversity, the Muslim Student Association, Students for Justice in Palestine
