Download iCal FileMedieval Muslim Spain (al-Andalus in Arabic and Sepharad in Hebrew) brought together peoples and languages from around the Mediterranean and together they produced a unique and vibrant culture, the impact of which is still felt in many realms. In particular, however, the radically innovative musical traditions that first emerged there spread far and wide, north to the Christian kingdoms of northern Iberia and southern France, as well as across North Africa to the eastern Mediterranean and even south to Yemen.
This lecture will describe the fascinating musical life of this period through portraits of individual singers who traveled far and wide from the 8th to the 17th centuries and will close with a few examples of modern Andalusi music from across the Middle East.
Prof. Dwight Reynolds is a professor of Arabic Language & Literature in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of California in Santa Barbara.
The talk is co-sponsored by the Department of Classics and Mediterranean Studies and the Arab American Cultural Center.
