The first Mexican fiction film portraying the country's black population

Afro-Mexicans represent 1.2% of Mexico's total population. They were first recognized as an ethnic group in 2015. La Negrada explores the lack of representation and social norms which contribute to the discrimination of Mexico's Afro-descendant population. The film employed non-professional local actors to tell the story of Juana and Magdalena, who are romantically involved with Neri, a fisherman in Costa Chica.

Screening followed by a discussion facilitated by Crystal Galván, graduate student in the LALS Program.
