Are you interested in building connections, healing, and working towards justice with survivors at UIC?
We invite you to HEALS: Healing for Engagement, Action, & Leadership by Survivors, a drop-in gathering space for UIC students who have experienced gender-based violence (domestic/dating violence, sexual assault, harassment, stalking, and family abuse) and those who support them. Over lunch and crafts, we will check in, celebrate wins, troubleshoot challenges, and discuss issues related to safety & healing.
UIC undergraduate, graduate, and professional students are welcome!

- Wednesday, February 5: Trusting Ourselves and Our Community: Survivors Podmapping & Building Connections
Where do you go for support when you need it? In this session, we will get to know each other, build podmaps, and reflect on what community can/should look like during times of violence and uncertainty.
- Wednesday, February 12: Love Letter to a Survivor
Celebrate Valentine’s Day with HEALS! We will write love letters to ourselves and the survivors in our lives, while learning how to practice radical self-love.
- Wednesday, February 26: What Now? Relationships, Boundaries, and Consent After Trauma
It is hard to navigate relationships at home, work, school, and online after encountering violence. Join us to share stories, troubleshoot challenges, and explore what healthy relationships and boundaries mean to you as a survivor.
- Wednesday, March 12: Surviving School & Work: Managing Midterms
What are the challenges of moving through classes and work as a survivor? What forms of support and accommodations do you need in the classroom, and how can you access them? We will leave the session with concrete strategies and goals for the second half of the semester.
- Wednesday, April 9: Survivors Activating Change: Learning from Activists, Movements, & Ourselves
How do survivors of gender-based violence advocate for change? During this conversation with survivors and those who support them, we will celebrate how we have raised our voices, learn about survivor-led movements, and explore ways to get involved.
- Wednesday, April 23: Portraits of Survivorship: Sexual Violence in the Media
How does the media get survivorship right--and wrong? We'll discuss portrayals of survivors in social media, music, TV, film, and the news, and reflect on what these stories mean for survivors in their everyday lives.
- Wednesday, May 7: Celebrating Ourselves, Honoring Each Other
Join us to celebrate survivors' accomplishments, big and small! We will honor graduating students and recognize the ways that we have survived and thrived this year.
