Download iCal FileThe Office of Diversity and the Graduate College invite you to the STRIDE conference on Wednesday, September 12, in the Thompson Rooms at the Student Center West. STRIDE is a network that brings together grant-based and institutional pipeline programs with academic support, student life, and cultural programs and centers. We seek to learn from each other and work together to broaden and deepen our efforts to serve our diverse body of students at UIC.
Starting with registration and breakfast at 8 a.m., there will be four sessions, each 75 minutes long, to accommodate a 10-15 minute response to key questions by each panelist around the main session topics, leaving ample time for Q&A and breakout sessions. Additionally, STRIDE programs will host an adjoining, concurrent open house for all UIC students and community members who want to learn more about the programs. The panel descriptions are below:
Session I: Incentivizing Faculty to Identify and Pursue New Grant Opportunities
UIC is encompassed by a large number of distinct, urban communities and is recognized as a diverse center of learning for undergraduate students through MSI designations. Discussion of the opportunities and challenges for faculty pursuing of new pipeline grant opportunities that help promote student development and research.
Session II: Recruitment and Mentoring
Discussion of the best recruitment practices that are used to identify and recruit potential and current students who could benefit from new programming. In addition, mentoring is increasingly viewed as an essential tool in retaining students. Analysis of effective mentoring practices and institutional mechanisms that can best support mentoring.
Session III: Student and Program Assessment Practices at UIC
Describe how information is gathered and analyzed in order to identify prospective students and monitor their progress and outcomes after program completion and graduation. Learn about current assessment and tracking practices and challenges at UIC.
Session IV: Institutionalization and Sustainability of Programs
Sustainability is a challenge for any university program, especially for those that do not have dedicated and permanent university funding. Discussion of how grant-based programs and how collaborative networks of common resources can be developed.
