This film discusses the life of Umm Kalthoum, who is the most iconic singer in the Arab world. Her songs helped create a sense of shared identity across the Arab Region over the years.
October 9, 1pm-2:30: Wajd: Songs of Seperation (2018)
Filmed over a five year period from 2010, Wajd tells the stories of three musicians turned refugees. They use Sufi music as a form of resistance to tell their stories and rebuild their lives in the aftermath of destruction and atrocity.
October 30, 12-1:30pm: Electro Chaabi (2013)
The documentary braids together the stories of young Palestinians as they discover hip hop and use it as a tool to overcome decisions imposed by the occupation and colonization of Palestine. It features artists from Lyd, Gaza, Abba, and Nazareth.
All film screenings are held at the Arab American Cultural Center
Wajid: Sons of Separation and Sling Shot Hip Hop are co-sponsored by the Chicago Palestine Film Festival.
