LCC – Zona Abierta: People on the Move: Forced Migration and Human Rights Violations in the Americans

February 28, 2019

1:00 PM - 2:30 PM

Address

Chicago, IL 60607

Presented by the UIC Latino Cultural Center and Arab American Cultural Center

Today’s world is facing a global refugee crisis of an unprecedented scale. There are nation-states causing and perpetuating this crisis, and those who are shouldering the burden of its consequences. From the crisis in Venezuela, to the peace instability in Colombia, to the migrant caravan traveling through Central American countries to Mexico and the United States, this conversation will examine the underlying themes between these unique human rights disasters, including policies which deepen the human rights violations of those in need of international protection. Join us as Erika Guevara-Rosas, the Americas Regional Director of Amnesty International, leads the discussion and learn what Amnesty International is doing to end the demonization of migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers.

Join the movement to defend them!

Erika Guevara-Rosas is a feminist and human rights lawyer, who currently serves as Americas Director at Amnesty International (AI), where she leads the organization's human rights work across the continent. Erika has two decades of substantial international experience in the fields of human rights, gender justice and philanthropy. Before joining Amnesty, Erika served as the Americas Director at the Global Fund for Women, and was a Legal/Protection Officer for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, managing complex operations in Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Panama and Venezuela.
